The Oregon safety has a game that is instinctive and feisty, which could come in handy for a Titans team that might need to value shop at the position.

One of the most fun aspects of every NFL Draft as a writer is scouting prospects and trying to identify those hidden gems….the diamonds in the rough, if you will…guys who might not be Day 1 or Day 2 picks, but sure as hell seem to have what it takes to make it in the NFL. Today, this year’s “Hidden Gems” series rolls on with a look at the instinctive safety from Oregon, Evan Williams.

If I haven’t said it before, the Titans have a lot of needs across this roster….23, to be exact, if my math is adding up accurately. Having so many needs means that this team is going to be forced to bargain shop at certain positions. It’s not like they’re going to be able to afford every big ticket free agent, and they damn sure don’t have multiple first round picks. They’re going to address their main needs and then have to get a little creative to fill holes. This year’s class of wide receivers, defensive linemen, running backs, and safeties is littered with guys who have good enough qualities to latch onto and think they’ll get a shot at the next level. All happen to be needs for the Titans, but I’m here today to write about a specific safety who is currently the 15th ranked safety and the 202nd overall prospect according to NFL Mock Draft Database, Evan Williams out of Oregon.

Williams first caught my eye down in Mobile for the Senior Bowl, when I noticed how smoothly he undercut the route of a tight end and stuck his hand in the throwing window to create a PBU. I felt like every time I looked over and watched the safeties, he was doing something like that. He seemed to just have a natural feel for timing his breaks. Our buddy James Foster told me he had some pretty good tape, and after seeing him show out all week, I thought I’d better make time to watch it because I was already thinking “Hidden Gems” list.
