Nick Holz, or K-Mart Bobby Slowik, is a guy that has stirred up some good discussions lately. I am going to give you my opinion on some of the themes or narratives surrounding Holz, but I don’t think the hire is as bad or even as important, as people want you to think.
It happens across every sport and every fan base, but everyone feels like they have to immediately grade a hire or make a sweeping statement about them. I get it. This is a fast-paced news cycle, and you have to get your clicks, views, and/or impressions at all times.
Holz wasn’t on my radar, but only because I totally forgot the Press Taylor was related to Zac Taylor and I didn’t think to look up high school yearbooks. Side note: Did you know Maurice Jones-Drew was on that high school team too? Bet ya didn’t!
Anyways, I think the lack of awareness surrounding Holz has allowed some local analysts/fanalysts/fans alike to easily relate this to: Oh, I don’t know him. He sucks. He’s inexperienced. It also allowed the casuals in those categories to go box score scouting and say: “Well the Jaguars got worse! He’s the problem!”
It just is what it is, but I only bring it up as a reminder that the majority of the time being first doesn’t equal being right. Let’s get into it.
