Alright, it is time to get into some prospects. This morning all paid subscribers should’ve gotten access to the Wide Receiver Traits tool, and that will be the bulk of information used when looking at some of the prospects for the Titans.
The Tool is broken down into 4 sections, where you can see every wide receiver’s numbers for the metrics, but also the comparison tool allows you to see the info stacked up against the drafting history of the Titans and Carthon. Here is how we are stacking these prospects up:
The Physical Traits
The Athletic Traits
The Advanced Metrics
The On-The-Field Metrics
I am actually going to grade these players on a scale of 100. Each section is worth 25 points. We will see where some of these guys stack up to their contemporaries in this draft class. I will also slowly eliminate some prospects as we go as to get a very concise look.
Any wide receivers that aren’t on the list, but the Titans meet with (Ed Lee, Xavier Smith) will be added as the information comes out as well. Before we get into the wide receiver prospect the Titans have shown the most love to, let’s talk about the timing of extensions.
A Quick Aside: The Timing of NFL Extensions
Big Jeff’s inexperienced agent sent Titans Twitter into a tizzy with a very weird video. Clicking tock, and all that. Depending on who you are you either view it as a good thing or bad thing. I view it as a dumb thing. Not shocking this guy has been NFLPA official since 2019 and has 0 successfully negotiated contracts under his belt.
Anyways, it’s brought back into discussion the discourse surrounding when a Big Jeff extension will happen. I hate to break it to you, actually I don’t, but its not happening until after the draft into the summer.
You may have been hoping that the summer extensions was just a Jon Robinson thing, but in fact, it’s largely a NFL thing. I think teams want everything settled before going big into discussions with players about extension, specifically players with a year or two under contract.
Ran Carthon was the Director of Pro Personnel with both the Rams and 49ers, and he worked closely with Paraag Marathe who handled the salary cap and negotiations for the 49ers.
So, I looked at the several “big time” extensions the 49ers of doled out since 2017. Here’s what I got:
I think you can glean from this, that the evidence shows this Simmons extension isn’t coming until summer time. Big Jeff has a year left on his contract and will end up being fined if he misses any mandatory stuff or games, so it is very likely he won’t hold out.
However, he does have an agent who has shown a propensity for immature and senseless tactics, so maybe he will continue to make weird decisions. In the end, if you’re wanting a Simmons contract before the draft, adjust your thinking.
