Mike Vrabel is gone. The revolution of evolution has arrived. The Titans are amidst of a coaching search and the first name dropped on Wednesday Jan. 10th from Justin Melo, when he put out there to expect the Titans to interview Bengals Offensive Coordinator Brian Callahan. He got very reliable word about this.
While this shouldn’t be a surprise, it is the first step in the right direction for the Tennessee Titans as they move forward finding a head coach that aligns with their vision for the team. So, since this is the first announcement, this is the first candidate I will write about, but I will also talk about what that vision is and why the next head coach has to be an offensive minded head coach for it to be fulfilled.
The Vision
I haven’t decided if I am going to put this in every coaching article, but I think I should because it will serve as a good reminder that we have the vision in black and white. Now, I think it’s ridiculous that they couldn’t just repeat this same thing out in two different press conferences. Utterly dumb and baffling decisions. However, I find it equally dumb and baffling that people say we don’t have the vision.
Sure, I’d like more details too. I’d like to have heard them both say it verbally instead of being “to be continued” by their pressers. Gotta be honest though, we have the makeup of said visio, and to perpetuate the idea we don’t have it in front of us is very disingenuous.
As the NFL continues to innovate and evolve, I believe the teams best positioned for sustained success will be those who empower an aligned and collaborative team across all football functions. Last year, we began a shift in our approach to football leadership and made several changes to our personnel to advance that plan. As I continued to assess the state of our team, I arrived at the conclusion that the team would also benefit from the fresh approach and perspective of a new coaching staff.
I believe the Tennessee Titans can and will be a premier National Football League franchise. It's what our fans deserve, and there will be hard decisions along the way.
Add in last year’s statement where she talks about being Super Bowl Champions here’s the vision:
Innovative
Evolved
Sustained Success
Aligned and Collaborative
Premier NFL Franchise
Super Bowl Champions
Now, I wish, probably much like you do, they had said this in their presser on Tuesday. I wish, probably much like you, we would have more details on what these words mean. Yet, I find myself not banging my first against the table demanding a vision. We got it.
I think it is asking a lot for fans and media to connect these dots, especially during an emotional time. Sometimes it’s best to just keep repeating the same thing, even if its relatively vague. You said it once, say it again. It’s easy.
But I do think that these words, Vrabel’s firing, and Carthon’s history we can discern where this team is headed in their vision. Now it is time for the head coach to fit this vision and then everyone to put this vision into action.
A Quick History of Brian Callahan
Brian Callahan (age 39), son of Bill, is just a midwestern boy from Champaign, Illinois. If you’re not familiar with Brian’s father, Bill, he is a longtime NFL coach and has been coaching at the college ranks ever since Brian was born.
Bill Callahan is most known for being one of the best offensive line coaches in the entire league. Bill and Brian have never had a real chance to work together. Bill is currently the the Cleveland Browns offensive line coach and has been since 2020.
So, Brian was raised in the world of football and coaching since exiting his mother’s womb. It’s in his DNA and it has shown. Brian got his start in the NFL in 2010 as an offensive assistant, at the age of 26, and became offensive coordinator with the Bengals in 2019 at age 35. He has been the offensive coordinator ever since.
