We are nearly a week removed from the official opening of NFL Free Agency. I would say that the Tennessee Titans have had a solid B grade when it comes to the moves, they’ve made over the last week or so. A lot of sites have probably done their usual “Grading the Titans Free Agency” schtick, but I am going to take a different approach.
The Titans are at a B grade so far this offseason, and while that’s fine in a vacuum, the roster is more like a C- grade. That’s what I am going to talk about today, how to use the rest of the offseason to get that C- grade closer to where it needs to be for this team.
Titans Free Agency So Far
So far, the Titans have made value signings at positions that fill needs on this team. The less holes you have going into the draft the better, and the Titans have chosen to do that by value shopping.
A lot of people have used the term “bargain bin”, but I don’t think that is the correct way to look at it. It’s not fair to the quality of players they have signed, and fair to the overall strategy at work. Being big spenders in free agency can lead a team down a path it’s hard to come back from.
Jadeveon Clowney, Bud Dupree, Julio Jones, and Robert Woods are just some of the big splashes that ultimately didn’t pan out. Not only did those not pan out, but they also left players that did pan out in messy contract situations. Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry, and Kevin Byard all had their contracts restructured, which put them in a precarious situation in 2023.
The new regime needed to make moves without repeating mistakes of the fired predecessor. That’s what they’re doing. This is a good thing. They’re also signing guys that represent what they’ve said they wanted all off-season so far: Athletic, Versatile, and Violent players.
None of these players signed would be considered household names or faces of the franchise, but that isn’t what this team needs to succeed. Mike Vrabel has proven to be an excellent coach and can get the most out of any player he is given.
So, while it would be nice to make a big splash in free agency this year, ultimately the big splash the team needs is to sign Big Jeff to an extension, and these contracts allow the team to absorb the cap hit in future years, while not being hamstrung with other expensive or bad contracts.
However, this team needs to fill some holes, specifically on the starting offense, and so let’s talk about how to ideally fill these needs. The focus is going to be on key positions:
Wide Receiver
Tight End
Offensive Line
Third Down Running Back
Back Up QB
Making the Best of a Boring Situation
My co-host of Football & Other F Words put it best:
It’s a very uninspiring list for sure, but there are several players on the list that can fill various roles. After all, the Titans only have three wide receivers that have shown up in games: Treylon Burks, Kyle Philips, and NWI. Racey McMath has showing up in games but in a bad way, so, in my opinion, the Titans still need three wide receivers.
I have always thought that because you want NWI and McMath to have to earn their spots in camp. I like to look at these free agent wide receivers in different categories.
