Back when it was announced that the Texans fired Tim Kelly after the conclusion of the 2021 season, I thought for sure the Titans would immediately take the opportunity to fire Todd Downing. The weeks went by, and nothing changed with the offensive coordinator for the Titans, and I was a little disheartened.
Not because I thought Kelly was some savior, but I just knew Downing wasn’t it. Roughly a month later it was announced that the Titans would be hiring Kelly as the passing game coordinator. I was pretty happy with that. I even wrote how I thought Kelly could make a difference in many key areas for the Titans offense.
Boy, was I wrong! While some things improved, the passing game was an utter disaster. Hell, the offense was a disaster, and that is why you see Downing out on the street. I thought Downing should’ve been fired fairly early in the season to let Kelly take over. I figured Kelly was an insurance plan just in case things went south. Again, I was wrong.
Rare moment of being wrong back-to-back on a subject for ya boy. The weeks went on, the offense continued to be abysmal, and Kelly continued to just be floating around the practice field aimlessly talking to the tight ends.
The offseason is over, and Kelly became the de facto favorite to take over play-calling duties. Once the offseason concluded, I was done with trying to make Kelly a thing. I think he needed to go with Downing, and the Titans just hit a reset, but he’s still lingering.
The Titans have talked to Kelly about the open offensive coordinator. However, is he as big a favorite among the field of candidates as fans think? If he were to get the job, will the offense be any better? Let’s talk about it.
So, What Was Up With Tim Kelly?
