I have been talking about this article series for a while now, but it is finally time for the first installment of the Ryan Tannehill Vs… series. In this series we are going to look at a few things like stats, scheme fit, and cost for each of these quarterbacks.
Later today, by 3pm CST, Derek Carr will have been cut by the Raiders. He was due a lot of guaranteed money if he had been kept on, and because of his no-trade clause he denied the Raiders of receiving any sort of compensation. I still believe that the Saints will be his most likely landing spot. However, could he be an option for the Titans?
It’s definitely possible, after all the Titans have yet to come out and fully support Tannehill as their QB for 2023 in any sort of public capacity. Until they do that, they will be connected to every possible quarterback scenario out there.

Now, you to be cognizant of how the connections are worded. Don’t let radio shows or poorly produced podcasts try to get inside your head and say “The Titans are pursuing (insert quarterback’s name here).” When in truth that is not what the report said.
Case in point this tweet:
That’s not at all what was said or been said by Ian Rapoport. To say the team is pursuing is twisting words around, and making it sound like they’re already actively talking to him. Again, it’s not what Rapoport said. He said: “among the teams expected to be interested.” Expected to be interested =/= interested =/= pursuing =/= going to pursue.
Just keep your head on a swivel and try not to fall for everything you read on Twitter. Always go and check where this came from and who else is corroborating this information.
However, why are these reports popping up? Well, the Titans have yet to declare Tannehill is here to stay. He has a $36.6m cap hit after all and he’s on the last leg of his deal. So, why does RapSheet and others keep bringing their name up? Think who benefits.
Who Benefits from Titans/QB Rumors
The Titans benefit having this out there for a few possible reasons. One, if they’re actively working on an extension behind the scenes, they would use this as leverage. Essentially, they’re saying we have other options, why do we need to pay you “X amount”?
Secondly, they’re maybe wanting teams think they’re possible looking at the QB market to drum up trade interest. Execs, agents, and the like are probably thinking, Titans looking at QBs? Wonder how much they’d trade Tannehill for?
Titans aren’t the only ones that benefit. Carr’s agent would benefit by floating this out there. It makes it look like he’s some hot commodity and there should be a bidding war for his service. Carr needs his market to get hot, because when the Raiders wanted to trade him, only one team came calling: The Saints.
So, obviously there is a possibility that Carr’s agent isn’t getting the sense that the market for the quarterback is as hot as he would like or thought it would be. So, makes sense to throw out a bunch of names out there to try and get people interested.
