Happy Memorial Day! You probably weren’t expecting an article Stacked in your Inbox today but I just wanted to give you some quick thoughts on the hottest Titans topic out there right now: DeAndre Hopkins.
DeAndre Hopkins
I have zero doubt about two things: DeAndre Hopkins would change the outlook of this season and the Titans have already been in contact with his representation. It may not ever be reported that they have but I think it is a 99.9998% chance they did.
If you think otherwise you’re just being someone who hates that Jon Robinson got fired. The relationships on this staff, the need at the position, and the fact that Ran Carthon has watched Hopkins average 105.2 yards per game versus the 49ers.
You need to remember, and I am going to tweet this later (which means I tweeted this earlier by the time you read this), but you need to remember that one of Carthon’s many duties was scouting the veteran players of the team the 49ers were playing that week. So, he has a copious amount of footage and knowledge of what to expect from Hopkins.
When you tie that in with the experience and relationships that Vrabel, Kelly, O’Hara, and London already have with Hopkins, it would be downright silly to think they didn’t call or contact just because someone nationally doesn’t say so. They’re in the mix. Count it.
I have pretty much been on the trade for Hopkins and worry about the money later, bandwagon, and now you can just make an ultra-competitive offer for a wide receiver who in 9 games in 2022 had almost 200 more receiving yards than Robert Woods. Woods was the Titans lading receiver and played in all 17 games.
His impact would be immediate and it would help the Titans in the immediate but also the future if it was a multi-year deal. If this team had just 200 extra receiving yards from Hopkins that’s likely a one or two game swing in the win column in 2022.
He would be able to mentor Burks, who I believe Mike Herndon has pretty much said reminds him of Hopkins, and he would push everyone in their rightful depth chart spot. If it is a multi-year deal, he could be a reliable target for Levis when he gets the start in the future. It also helps, theoretically, eliminate an obvious draft need, because this team does not want to draft for need.
I have a conspiracy theory for you: The Titans were obviously in constant contact with the Cardinals about trading up to third overall. Now, those talks (supposedly) include some involvement of Hopkins. Assuming that is so, and Hopkins would want a new contract or the Titans want to rework it, the Titans would likely have permission to work something out with hi agent.
This means the groundwork is already there. The Bills and Chiefs had substantive talks but nothing came to fruition, and the Titans wanted the Third overall pick and we all know that never happened.
My conspiracy theory: When Vrabel said at the end of the draft press conference free agency wasn’t over, he was alluding to the fact he knew Hopkins was likely going to be cut. This is his plan. Just a conspiracy theory for you.
