Here’s what I was listening to on Spotify while I wrote this:
The Tennessee Titans are in the midst of an offensive coordinator search. At the very start of their search, they reached out to the Kansas City Chiefs and put in requests to interview current coaches; Matt Nagy (Quarterbacks Coach) and Eric Bienemy (Offensive Coordinator).
This perked up a lot of the fan base. Two coaches from the same team that has had extensive and sustained offensive success. It' was also a sign that Vrabel was possibly looking at switching up the scheme. Then Josina Anderson came in, and according to her sources, put a damper on things.
The people went from hype, to aw man in a hurry. Especially the local media, who have taken the "Nagy has yet to confirm” to mean that he has ignored their texts or calls and is completely ghosting them. That’s not what it says, nor is it the logical conclusion to draw, in my opinion. The logical conclusion would be that at the time of the tweet he had yet to confirm or schedule an appointment.
Possible he wants to solely focus on the playoffs out of respect for his team. After all, he hasn’t had any other interviews scheduled and fulfilled. On top of that, another possibility is that he’s waiting on Bienemy.
Bienemy’s contract with the Chiefs is officially up after they exit the playoffs. He wants a head coaching gig really bad, but over the last few seasons that has proved fruitless. The best thing for him would be to take an offensive coordinator position where he has full control of the offense and play-calling. So, if Bienemy misses out on head coaching jobs, and were to leave for a OC job somewhere else, Nagy would probably prefer chilling in Kansas City.
I think both candidates are squarely in the crosshairs for this team, and that’s why we haven’t heard a lot of movement on the offensive coordinator search as of this writing. If the Titans want to interview them, they’ll now have to wait.
I am getting some conflicting information on this front though, CBS Sports says that once the divisional round is over, no team can interview a coach that is still in the playoffs until after the conference championship and have up until the Sunday before Super Bowl Sunday to get the interviews scheduled and finished.
NFL.com is saying that they can interview all the way until January 28th, and then pick back up January 30th, and have until February 5th for those coaches in the playoffs. So, the window to interview the Chiefs coaches is either shut or limited until after the conference championship games.
Either way, with these coaches having to gamelan heavily around a recently injured Patrick Mahomes, I would assume the focus is going to be on that. After all, the Joe Burrow led Bengals have the Chiefs’ number and they need all hands on deck for the game.
Alright, enough of that, let’s talk about these coaches.
