Around this time of year, fans of NFL teams having disappointing teams only have one thing on their mind.
Losing.
Not because they’re upset with the losing — although each to their own — but because they want their team to lose. It’s a classic trope by the average delusional sports fan, all in hopes of their favorite team losing somehow bringing success in the future.
Or in other words, coping.
Seriously though, we’ve seen fans of bad teams beg for losses for years.
We see it most prevalently in the NBA, with fans begging for lots of losses in hopes of their team drafting the next LeBron James or even most recently, the next Victor Wembanyama. We’ve seen it a good bit in the NHL as well, with fans hoping their team drafts the Sidney Crosby or Conor McDavid.
We’ve also seen it in the NFL, but mostly so fans can hang on to the hope that their team drafts the next face of the franchise, or in other words a long term answer at quarterback.
In the Titans’ case, they don’t really need to look for a quarterback in this upcoming draft.
But losing will do them lots of good, especially if they want to address the tackle position, one that has plagued them heavily for the last 2 seasons.
However, there’s some out there that despise the notion of deliberately losing in hopes of receiving a higher draft pick. Why? Well, one could guess that they don’t want their team to be losers.
Which is fine.
But in this case, it isn’t.
Let me tell you why.
Why hurt your own draft spot?
In the Titans’ case, they have a route available that’ll give them a good shot at selecting one of the two best tackle prospects in the upcoming draft.
Joe Alt and Ola Fashanu.
In order to do that though, the Titans need to their own first round pick to be in the 1-6 range.
You could add a spot of two to make it between 1-7 or 1-8, but Alt and Fashanu are very promising prospects that could cause some chaos in the top 10 of the draft, so it’s better to be on the safe side.
In order to even be in this conversation though, the Titans have to keep losing of course. However, if some fans get their wish, the Titans will be out of range to take Alt or Fashanu.
Which begs the question. Why would you even want that?
You seriously want to keep winning meaningless games, giving yourself false hope of a playoff spot, all while missing out on a potential plug and play piece that’ll have a chance to end your tackle problems for the next decade and some change?
That makes about as much sense as me rooting for the damn Red Sox — Yankees fan — or me rooting for Alabama to have any success whatsoever — screw you Zach.
Why would you want to avoid something like that? Just so you can have a paper certificate hung on your wall that congratulates you for winning an extra 2 or 3 games?
It’s just stupid and doesn’t make a lick of sense.
This all seems like common sense, which it is. But it has to be brought up again because some people simply can’t understand small sacrifices for the greater good.
Maybe winning has clouded their judgement, and maybe the thrill of being relevant is grasping at their heels, but use your brain for a second.
It might seem hard at first, but give it a crank and you’ll begin to understand.
At least I hope.
But what if that isn’t enough for you? What if you’re still obsessed with the idea of winning, even at the cost of your future?
What’ll you do with your meaningless wins?
Even if you still want the Titans to win, what’ll come of it?
You’re not getting a playoff spot, you’re not winning the division, so what point is there?
Just to have some personal accomplishment that you can hold for the rest of your life? And for what reason? You’ll just be holding something useless, like a piece of dirty plastic, some muddy piece of paper, hell even even the Ken Whisenhut days amount to something equivalent in uselessness.
So why? Why would you want something so useless and unnecessary?
Maybe those fans have an addiction to being a winner, but they probably don’t realize the cost.
Either way, it’s stupid to want the Titans to keep meaninglessly winning all for the sake of something that isn’t worth a damn thing.
Overview
I think I’ve said what I wanted to say.
If you read this and still want this team to win down the stretch for the sake of your personal reasons, then honestly you’re beyond saving at this point.
But I’d you gained some clarity reading this, then I humbly present you with something you desperately needed before.
Some common sense.
Hopefully you can take that common sense and use it for things outside of this thing we call a sport. But knowing you — looking at you weird fans — I doubt it’ll be useful in the first place.
