We’re officially in the dog days of summer now.
It’s hot, it’s humid, you can’t step outside without breaking a sweat, life is simply passing by, and baseball is the only common sport being played right now.
Unless you’ve been heavy into the Euros and Copa America, which in that case kudos to you for enjoying some wonderful football this summer.
As for the American footballing side of things, we’re steaming towards the start of training camps for all 32 teams. That means the usual return to the practice field for veterans and players with locked in roster spots, along with hopes and dreams of roster hopefuls being rewarded based on sweaty, hot, grueling summer practices along with a few preseason games.
Nothing like it is there?
However, there is one problem. There’s virtually zero content to focus on right now. Usually you see people throwing hot takes at a wall hoping something sticks, just so a conversation can be started so we can all avoid sitting around in awkward silence waiting for camp to arrive.
I don’t do that though because, well….it’s boring and there’s better ways to spend your time.
So instead, let’s do some early 53 man roster projections and call it a day.
OFFENSE
Quarterback(2): Will Levis, Mason Rudolph
Will Levis could be on the verge of a breakout year, that’s if he stays healthy and is able to take that next step in his development.
No matter what happens though, he’ll have the support to do so with an upgraded receiving core and a potentially improved offensive line.
The real interest comes at the backup spot, with Mason Rudolph and Malik Willis both set to battle it out for the spot. I give the edge to Rudolph right now because we know what he is and what he is can be a decent backup.
Willis has a chance to surprise, but I don’t think he will.
Running Back(3): Tyjae Spears, Tony Pollard, Dillon Johnson(R)
Spears and Pollard will be the two main backs here, as both will prove to be very useful in an offense that’s expected to utilize the passing game a lot more.
The third spot behind those two will be decided in camp. I gave the spot to Johnson because of his toughness and physicality, a nice change between the two main backs that prioritize elusiveness.
Wide Receiver(7): Calvin Ridley, DeAndre Hopkins, Tyler Boyd, Treylon Burks, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Jha’Quan Jackson(R), Kearis Jackson
The first 3 spots are presumably locked up barring any injury, so there’s not much to discuss there.
Westbrook-Ikhine should find his way into a roster spot as well, as he’s been a reliable depth option for this team over the last few years. Burks should theoretically get a roster spot as well, as well as Jha’Quan Jackson, with both bringing potential special teams ability.
Although that relates more to Jackson more than anything, with Burks still possessing potential to bring something to the Titans’ passing game.
I gave the last spot to Kearis Jackson for special teams purposes, but anything can happen with that spot, including the team potentially willing to hold onto 6 guys instead of 7.
Tight End(3): Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle, Nick Vannett
Okonkwo and Whyle should be the 2 main guys at tight end, with Vannett sliding into the third spot as a blocking tight end, something the team doesn’t really have right now aside from Vannett.
Offensive Line(10): JC Latham(R), Peter Skoronski, Lloyd Cushenberry, Saahdiq Charles, Nicholas Petit-Frere, Daniel Brunskill, Dillon Radunz, Leroy Watson, Cole Spencer(UDFA)
Lathan, Skoronski, and Cushenberry all have starting spots locked down. The remaining spots at right guard and right tackle will be filled after camp.
Right now, I have Saahdiq Charles and Nicholas Petit-Frere winning those two jobs, but Brunskill will push Charles and a load of others will push Petit-Frere as well.
I kept Leroy Watson over Jaelyn Duncan and Geron Christian, with Watson’s familiarity with and apparent trust from Bill Callahan being the difference. Also kept Cole Spencer in as well, as he was given the most guaranteed money out of any UDFA, so the Titans must like his chances at competing for a spot.
DEFENSE
Defensive Line(5): Jeffery Simmons, T’Vondre Sweat(R), Sebastian Joseph-Day, Marlon Davison, TK McLendon Jr.
Simmons is the obvious top dawg and Sweat should be the main man opposite Simmons. Joseph-Day can play nose tackle as well and the Titans are hoping he can provide some much needed depth.
Davidson made some plays towards the end of last season, so did McLendon, so both get a nod as depth pieces inside.
Outside Linebacker(5): Harold Landry, Arden Key, Rashad Weaver, Thomas Rush(R), Jaylen Harrell(R)
Landry and Key are guaranteed roster spots, probably Weaver as well. Behind them though is nothing but inexperience. Rush impressed in minicamp and Harrell was productive at Michigan, but he also has some intrigue as a fun pass rushing project.
Caleb Murphy misses out right now, but a strong camp will probably give him the nod over Rush and/or Harrell.
The Titans could bring in more competition for someone like Weaver as well, but that remains to be seen.
Inside Linebacker(5): Kenneth Murray Jr., Cedric Gray(R), Jack Gibbens, James Williams(R), Otis Reese IV
Murray Jr. is the only player with a guaranteed spot, with the one opposite him to be determined through camp and the preseason.
Gibbens has the inside track, but Cedric Gray is an impressive rookie linebacker that could push for snaps as well. You should want that too, since Gibbens’ athleticism is just not all that great.
Behind them is James Williams, an interesting player that could be a chess piece used in sub packages, and Otis Reese IV who showed some flashes during the tail end of last season.
Corner(5): L’Jarius Sneed, Chidobe Awuzie, Roger McCreary, Jarvis Brownlee Jr.(R), Tre Avery, Anthony Kendall
Sneed, Awuzie, and McCreary is probably the best trio of corners the Titans have ever had. They should be the strong point of this defense, barring some sort of injury or unexpected poor performance.
Behind them is rookie Jarvis Brownlee Jr., Tre Avery potentially, and for now Anthony Kendall for special teams purposes.
Rookie Gabe Jeudy-Lally is an interesting player though and could push for a back end depth spot.
Safety(5): Amani Hooker, Elijah Molden, Jamal, Adams, Matthew Jackson, Mike Brown,
Hooker is the main guy, Molden should be his running mate, but the Titans could stand to add a safety to replace Molden in the starting lineup.
I have Jackson here for special teams and Mike Brown rounding out the spots with Shyheim Carter. Brown and Carter would theoretically be fighting for a spot if the Titans added another starting caliber safety like, let’s say Justin Simmons.
But for now, they both stick for special teams and depth reasons.
SPECIALISTS
Kicker(1): Nick Folk
Folk gave the Titans some much needed consistency at kicker last season and he should be expected to do the same again in 2024.
He’s on the older side, but experience and consistency trumps out potential when it comes to any other young kicker, at least right now
Punter(1): Ty Zenter
Zentner should be the punter if Ryan Stonehouse isn’t healthy when the season begins. We’ll know more come training camp, but for right now, I’d just bet on Zentner being the guy just to be safe.
Long Snapper(1): Morgan Cox
Cox has been the long snapper for a minute now, so no changes there.
