When a team doesn’t have much, if anything, to play for this late in the season, sometimes it’s hard to find anything to make note of regarding the team and its current makeup.
Instead, you're usually paying attention to results for the most part, trying to calculate each possible result to gauge how high a team’s draft position can be.
Or maybe you’re taking a deep dive into possible off-season scenarios, including scanning over draft prospects and deluding yourself into thinking which free agents could hit the market. We’ve seen a lot of that over the past few months or so, as Titans fans have been drooling at the prospect of Tee Higgins hitting the market.
Low chance of that that happening by the way.
However, there’s one other topic of discussion that can pop up as your team concludes it’s slow walk towards the off-season. And that’s evaluating which current players could stick around for the future.
Or better yet, which current players could increase their stock heading into next season and potentially beyond.
Usually you can chop the list down to around 1 or 2 players, like a younger skill player that hasn’t had the best of starts to their career, or a higher draft pick that hasn’t been able to make the impact warranted of their draft position.
But in this case, there’s a few that stand out when it comes to this specific topic of discussion.
Let’s discuss who and why.
Treylon Burks
This is probably the most obvious one.
Burks has followed up a disappointing 2022 rookie year with….another disappointing year in 2023.
He’s battled injuries — including another scary concussion — and hasn’t produced at the level the Titans have wanted him to, whenever he has been healthy.
Which, if you’re new here, hasn’t been a norm at all so far.
Burks this year has caught only 14 passes for 210 yards and has done virtually nothing to prevent the Titans from regretting their draft night trade of [redacted].
Because he’s been so ineffective, the offense has been left to crawl for the big sized crumbs DeAndre Hopkins provides, as well as the ant sized ones others have left as well.
I’ll concede the fact that he’s been seen numerous times getting open this season but with no ensuing target and has been used in a variety of ways that prevent him from having a set role. But that isn’t the way a former first round receiver should be viewed at this point.
Because of Burks’ inability to impress on the field, the Titans will now go into the off-season with receiver being a big need….again.
How they address it? Who the hell knows. There’s the draft of course, but there’s some shot in the dark of an option being on the market as well.
But what we do know is that the Titans can’t bank on any eye opening resurgence from Burks until he proves he’s capable.
And so far, he’s proven incapabale.
Tre Avery
No, this isn’t an insane take, I promise.
The reason why Tre Avery is even here, is because of the Titans’ unknown loyalty towards him despise some crazy inconsistency and flat out bad play from Avery himself.
For that reason, Avery stands as a player to gain quite a bit over these last two games.
Why?
He could carve out some sort of role as a depth corner, although that would have to involve Avery somehow putting together some good play across multiple weeks.
He has yet to do that, the reason being maybe he’s not as talented as the Titans’ staff either believes he is or how talented they want him to be — bingo everyone! — who knows.
But what we do know, is that Avery could gain some good graces with the Titans’ staff if he can play well. Because the Titans need good corners, multiple of them actually, and they won’t come easy in terms of the search.
So it’s either find some solutions in house — preferred option of course — or go full out on uprooting the current group and plugging in new players over the next couple of offseasons.Â
Either one of Rashad Weaver or Trevis Gipson
This one is a bit of a wild card.
The Titans are set with their edge group, at least for 2024 with Harold Landry, Arden Key, and Denico Autry returning.
Behind them though? Dust, spider webs, hopes, and dreams.
The Titans tried to find something with Weaver and Trevis Gipson, but none have proven anything.
Weaver has been in and out of the lineup and has done nothing to build upon his impressive 2022 season, one that included a tally of 5 sacks and double digit pressures.
Gipson on the other hand, but brought in as an investment after some time in Chicago. He too has been in and out of the lineup, and like Weaver, has done virtually nothing to improve upon performances of the past.
The Titans have a good set of starting pass rushing talents, but behind them, there needs to be more proven depth.
Landry has found his old self over the past month or so, but Key has fought inconsistency and Autry isn’t getting any younger.
There needs to be depth behind these three, or else the Titans will be relying a great deal on them in 2024, just like how they have this season.
Honorable Mention: Aaron Brewer
Overview
There are probably a few other players that could’ve made this here list. Like Aaron Brewer and maybe Sean Murphy-Bunting.
But they were omitted, mostly because their roles will probably remain the same if the Titans bring them back, for reasons unknown of course.
Lack of other options, other plans, etc.
Both are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents once the new league year begins in 2024.
Be on the lookout for the 4 players mentioned above though, as they could carve out some momentum late in the season and potentially carry it with them into 2024.
That is if the Titans view them as holders of important roles.
