Whenever a team enters free agency with a boatload of cap space, a roster that needs filling, and dreams that could fill up the sky, fans can go a bit wild.
All that cap space? They want it filled. All those roster spots? They want them addressed. All those dreams? They want them realized.
And they want all of this sooner rather than later…or else.
It’s a tale as old as time, a tradition like no other. It’s never going to break, no matter how far we go into the future.
And while most might sit here and bash heads in over this behavior, over this rabid like response, I won’t.
Because I understand why fans act this way. When your team has had two straight mind numbing seasons full of pain, suffering, and sadness, you want nothing more than to see your team reverse course and act like they have some sense.
I mean who wants to see their team lose every week and ruin their mental health because their stability hinges on the success of their sports teams?
Nobody right?
Titans fans facing this exact dilemma right about now. The Titans have loads of money to spend, a roster that needs a big time infusion of talent on both sides of the ball, and they want to get back to the stage that gave them sweet tasting previews of what it’s like to win at the highest level.
Free agency could and should aid in that.
There’s plenty of players on the upcoming market that can help this team right now and in the future as well. Tackle, corner, inside linebacker, guard, receiver, these positions will have options available.
It’s like parading around GameStop as a kid.
If you were lucky enough to have the money, you had so much excitement you didn’t know what to do.
However, as much as you probably wanted to spend, you knew in the back of your head that if you spent too much, you’d be in some trouble.
Sure, you could ignore that and go about your business, spending your money however you liked. But at the end of the day, it would come with a cost, and that’s the cautionary tale the Titans have to keep in mind when the market officially opens next month.
Discipline is the right word for this situation.
If you lose it during free agency, with so much money at your disposal, you’re going to end up crashing out more times than not.
This isn’t to say the Titans won’t and can’t spend money, they need to do so if they want to accelerate this rebuilding process, keeping it from lagging on for more time than it should.
Let’s not forget, this roster is devoid of talent AND bodies as a whole right now. Money needs to be spent.
But again, discipline.
I touched on this last week, but just go back and look at the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles. You remember? The so called “Dream Team” they thought they had assembled, only for it to burn out like many thought it would?
That has become the modern nightmare of the dangers of going all in on unfamiliar faces with expensive contracts and bringing them in to turn water into wine.
In reality it’s a masked form of gambling, and no not the slot machine type of gambling, but the throwing thousands of dollars on a couple numbers in a game of craps at a Las Vegas casino type gambling.
That — spoiler — hasn’t worked out for any person that you know of.
No team has ever approached the ridiculous levels of spending like the 2011 Eagles since then, except maybe the Jacksonville Jaguars — but we know how that went right?
So if you’re a betting man or woman, you can probably bet on the Titans balking at the idea of throwing millions of dollars around, abandoning the vision that has set up every great team in the past decade and change.
And it’s a bet you’d probably win, if that matters to you.
With the Titans in such a delicate position to spend, eyes will be on their checkbook and how much they throw out to the masses, all in hopes of their latest project becoming a success.
How much will they spend, knowing they need talent and bodies at the same time? And with a lack of draft capital depth in the top 100, will they lean on the aggressive side?
Or will they practice discipline and be very careful with the cash they spend?
It should be an interesting development to follow, especially with many still questioning the direction of this project.
Guess that’s why they call this league a soap opera, huh?
