I was kicking myself when the Titans drafted James Williams in the 7th round…not necessarily because I hated the pick. I mean, as you’ll read, Williams isn’t exactly my favorite draft pick, but I can at least get the vision and the upside that he provides this roster. No, I was kicking myself that I didn’t mention him more in conversations about late round options for this team. Dennard Wilson wanted DAWGs, and Williams is a DAWG. The style with which he plays alone should have tipped me off that he’d be a possibility for this team.
The first thing that comes to mind when I think about Williams is heart. It’s not necessarily physicality because, though he’s definitely going for it, he does tend to miss a tackle from misdiagnosis or a poor angle a little too often for my liking. He’s rangy in how he’s willing to cover ground to get to the play. He’s versatile in how Miami lined him up all over the place. But, it’s his heart…how hard he plays the game that comes to mind. I’d imagine that’s what drew the Titans to Williams in the 7th round.
