Film Friday: Roger McCreary Is Off to a Hot Start
You've heard enough about Andre Dillard this week. Let's pop on some positive tape from a Titans defender that's having a pretty good year so far instead.
I’ve been writing weekly previews for each of the first three match-ups the Titans have been in. I’m not going to do that this week. For one, these ‘keys to victory’ pieces always drive me at least a little bit nuts because after a few games, we pretty well figure out what this team does and doesn’t do well. They always devolve into “well if they run Derrick Henry, don’t turn the ball over, and rush the passer, they’ll probably win.”
We’re three games into the season and that’s kind of already the case. In case you didn’t read my nod to Kevin Stefanski the other day, I feel like we already know where the Titans are bad and the Browns were able to exploit that last Sunday. The Bengals have more talented pieces in their receiving corps and they have a defensive coordinator who has had the Titans’ number in recent seasons. The offensive line isn’t anywhere near as good as Cleveland’s, but they should find success against this Titans team on Sunday.
So, forgive me if I’m not too excited to write a thousand words about how the Titans will need to account for Trey Hendrickson and try to tackle Ja’Marr Chase. Nay! Instead, I’d rather take a deep dive into the season that second year cornerback Roger McCreary has had so far. I’ve already written about him this summer, and if you guys remember that piece, you already know I’m a big fan of his. Earlier this week, I hopped on The Hot Read Podcast and said that I thought McCreary was probably the best player on the defense so far not named Jeffery Simmons (Denico Autry slipped my mind in the moment, but I digress). That was said off of a gut feeling from watching games, but not breaking down McCreary specifically. So, that’s what I’m here to do today. I’m firing up the Browns tape to key in on McCreary and find out why my gut was telling me that.
