The JC Latham discourse has been downright wild this week. I do my best to stay out of it, just chugging right along in my dark office watching tape into the wee hours of the morning and taking the occasional break to watch GloRilla music videos on YouTube while I sip a gin and tonic. But, I can’t help but wonder if the people that are crying foul at his opting out of drills have actually watched the tape. If so, I don’t know how you miss Latham’s functional athleticism. Sure, there are times when I watched him and thought he needed to drop his anchor a little sooner. It was as if he needed a gather step or two to establish his base, and was relying heavily upon his raw strength to hold guys up until he got there. Sure, there are times he was slightly over his skis. But, for strength to be this man’s calling card, he has some sneaky good technique, and he plays like he gets enjoyment out of knocking the wind out of a guy when he flops down on top of them.
